2002 Sylvanus Thayer Award
CITATION
THE AMERICAN SOLDIER
Since 1958, the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy has presented the
SYLVANUS THAYER AWARD to an outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto, “DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.”
For the Academy’s Bicentennial year, the Board of Trustees of the Association of Graduates decided to depart from the practice of presenting the award to a single citizen. Instead, the Award would be dedicated to “The Amercian Soldier” in honor of all of the men and women who have served in the U.S. Army during our Nation’s history. Collectively, they have embodied the values of DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY for the past two hundred and twenty-seven years.
